CLASSICAL NEWS
Remembering Isaac Stern
For more than 60 years Isaac Stern
has been a great -- and greatly loved -- performing artist, renowned worldwide for
his profound musical gift, his gusto for life, and his
passionate dedication to working with younger musicians
(among his discoveries: Yo-Yo Ma,
Itzhak Perlman, and Pinchas Zukerman).
Mr. Stern performed and recorded an extraordinary range of music for violin, from such
standard favorites as the Brahms, Beethoven and Mendelssohn
concertos to more modern masterpieces by Samuel Barber,
Bela Bartok, Igor Stravinsky and Leonard Bernstein. The
world of music mourns his passing, while we simultaneously
give thanks for the great joy his music has brought to our
lives.

Two recent releases capture the depth and breadth of Mr.
Stern's musical activity. Isaac Stern: My First 79 Years,
a compilation that draws upon his 56-year-relationship with
Sony Classical and related labels, including his 1945 debut
recording. Check out the web site.
His last recording was released in 2000, a collection of
both popular and neglected chamber works by Antonin Dvorak.
Working with Emanuel Ax,
Jaime Laredo, and
Yo-Yo Ma,
Stern brings a heartfelt, spirited performance of Dvorak's Piano
Quartet No. 2. Other works on the disc include Dvorak's
Sonatina in G and Romantic pieces, which Mr. Stern performs
with pianist Robert McDonald. The track listing at the
album web site
features samples from these delightful works.
Mr. Stern also features prominently on several releases in the
Bernstein Century series,
including the Beethoven Violin Concerto; and
Bernstein's own Serenade.
Esa-Pekka Salonen: LA Variations In Stores Now!!
Esa-Pekka Salonen returns this week with a new release
featuring his own compositions, including "LA Variations",
commissioned and performed on this recording by the
Los Angeles Philharmonic. The title track, according to the
LA Times, " explodes...it is music of immediate appeal
and relevance...an important step in musical culture...a
more than delightful work that does the city proud."
The new recording also features "Five Images after Sappho",
"Gambit", "Mania", and "Giro", performed by the likes
of soprano Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta.
Soprano Jane Eaglen Singing Italian Arias: In Stores Now!!
Jane Eaglen - "a rare and splendid voice," USA Today - takes
to the streets this week with rapturous performances of arias
from Madame Butterfly, Tosca, Turandot, and more.
Sample her extraordinary sound
along with the Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and
the Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of Carlo Rizzi.
