The Others: The Buzz Builds
Already picked by Entertainment Weekly as one of the 10 Summer
Movies Worth Seeing, The Others got three thumbs up from Salon.com
(to wit: "This old-fashioned, relentlessly unshowy film, anchored in
a performance that may...be the finest of Kidman's career") and a
long interview with Alejandro Amenábar - the writer, director, and
composer of the film - on NPR's popular program Fresh Air.
Listen to Amenábar's wonderful interview
with guest host Neil Conant on Fresh Air for Tuesday, August 14.
Then come back here and sample Amenábar's
evocative score - it's what movie music used to sound like.
The Producers: Last Call for Enter to Win!

CROSSOVER NEWS
Joshua Bell wins praise from and speaks to Amazon.com
"His tone is ravishingly beautiful, intense, focused, pure; it can
generate a warm glow and a radiant shimmer. His facility and silvery
sound in the violin's topmost register have always been particularly
striking and are displayed throughout to terrific effect. He handles
Bernstein's multifaceted style, rhythm, and idiom with easy, natural
mastery."
That's what Edith Eisler of Amazon.com wrote about Josh's playing
on West Side Story Suite.
"I prefer to go for something subtle rather than try to hit the
audience over the head; I'd rather err on that side than on the side
of overplaying or overexaggeration. It's a style of playing that I
was exposed to from my teacher, Josef Gingold. He would sometimes
play incredibly softly, so you felt like you were being invited into
his little world. He had a great influence on me in that way.
There's a huge concentration these days on belting all the time --
the louder the voice, the better. But for me, often the most magical
moments are the ones where you feel like you're being drawn in."
-Josh, speaking to Amazon.com editor Thomas May
about his playing technique for West Side Story Suite.

CLASSICAL NEWS
Carmignola and the VBO: High Praise from NY Times
Allan Kozinn sings the praises of Giuliano Carmignola
and the Venice Baroque Orchestra
in his review of their Mostly Mozart - and American - concert debut last week. "[The VBO] is, not
surprisingly, a youthful group that plays zestily and with a
tightly drilled ensemble." That's just for starters.

The album web site, meanwhile, includes video and samples from the new release.
"...vibrant, visceral and overwhelmingly exciting Vivaldi."
