SOUNDTRACKS NEWS

Planet of the Apes: Number One at the Box Office -- Soundtrack in Stores Now!
Tim Burton's vision of the '60s cult classic Planet of the Apes hit the top of the movie charts in its first week of release, grossing almost $70 million. As with so many other Burton films, Danny Elfman has provided the soundtrack -- this time, a richly rhythmic, dynamic score, as taut and exciting as the images on the screen.
Check out a sample of the score, including some of Paul Oakenfold's awesome remix of Elfman's title track, "Rule the Planet," on the soundtrack website.

The multimedia site includes a game, a Planet of the Apes Windows media skin, and much, much more!

(BTW, the first 100,000 CDs include an exclusive Topps Trading Card in the package. Don't wait -- they're running out fast!)

This September on HBO: Band of Brothers
Soundtrack by Michael Kamen Coming Soon

It started with Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg's award- winning film about World War II. Now Spielberg and the star of his film, Tom Hanks, have teamed up with HBO to produce Band of Brothers, an epic mini-series that follows the members of Easy Company through the Battle of the Bulge and beyond. The 10-hour series was based on the work of noted historian Stephen E. Ambrose.
The original soundtrack to the series, with a score by Grammy Award-winning composer Michael Kamen, will be released by Sony Classical at the beginning of September. Before then, though, you can listen to samples of this remarkable score at bandofbrotherssoundtrack.com.

MEL BROOKS ON PBS - RECORDING THE PRODUCERS: A MUSICAL ROMP WITH MEL BROOKS rolls out over the PBS airwaves starting this week.
Go behind the scenes with the entire cast and witness the antics of Mel, director Susan Stroman, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, as they record The Producers cast album with hilarity, heart, and show-stopping razzle-dazzle.

New York Premiere on Channel 13/WNET, August 5, 8 pm
Primetime Premiere on Great Performances, August 15, 8 pm

Check web site for full list of broadcast dates and times.

The Producers: Enter to Win!
Meantime, we've got a web site full of pix featuring Mel Brooks, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick and a whole bunch of people who may look a lot like you at a signing at Tower Records Lincoln Center in New York City.
If you see your mother's eyes and your father's jaw and you want a chance to see The Producers live on Broadway, enter the contest by August 28. We're drawing the tickets on August 30. But you won't know if we've got your face until you hit the web site.

CLASSICAL NEWS

Latest Word from Hilary Hahn, voted one of American's 25 most influential people by Time Magazine: This time, Philadelphia
After a busy spring that included concerts and recording sessions on both sides of the Atlantic, Hilary Hahn finds time to write from Philadelphia. As you'll learn, the violinist performs with an old friend and a new colleague, and prepares for a summer of intensive learning (but this time, Hilary won't be studying scores). Catch the news and the views in Hilary's latest Post Card from the Road.

Horowitz: A Reminiscence: In Stores Now The tradition of the piano virtuoso reaches back deep into the 19th century, but the virtuosi themselves were few and far between. Vladimir Horowitz, who was born in Tsarist Russia and died in New York, counted among the last proponents of this great 19th-century tradition.
Horowitz: A Reminiscence is a companion piece to the video that will air on selected PBS stations in August (check local listings).
In both the video and on the CD,listeners will encounter the depth and breadth of the virtuoso's command of the instrument, drawn from the decades of recordings made for the Columbia and CBS Masterworks labels.
The website for this album includes an excerpt from the film, an example of Horowitz's unparalleled interpretation of Chopin, and notes by Horowitz's longtime record producer, Thomas Frost. To sample this great performer's artistry, check out the album site.
