SOUNDTRACKS NEWS
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within: Larger than Life!
The movie world is abuzz about Final Fantasy: The
Spirits Within. While the talk - including a computer-
generated review on NPR's All Things Considered - is
about the technological advances presented in the film,
the movie's soundtrack includes a full orchestral
score by Hollywood veteran Elliot Goldenthal, and
flesh-and-blood performances by Lara Fabian of
"The Dream Within" and L'Arc-en-Ciel of "Spirit dreams
within" (words and music by hyde). It's a
sonic-spectacular, larger-than-life soundtrack that's
in stores now.
Glimpse some clips and catch the human side of Final
Fantasy on the soundtrack's web site.
The site includes screensavers, moving pictures,
some words from composer Elliot Goldenthal and an E-card.
Planet of the Apes: Rule the Planet Remix Music Video Hits MTV!
Tim Burton's remake of the '60s cult classic Planet of
the Apes will be in theaters next week. One key to Burton's
moviemaking has been his long association with Danny Elfman,
the part-time rocker/part-time film composer who provided the
score to this long-awaited blockbuster.
As a special bonus, Paul Oakenfold has created an
awesome remix of Elfman's title track, "Rule the Planet",
which is on the new music video at the conclusion of
"The Making of Planet of the Apes," which aired on MTV Monday
night. If you missed the first broadcast of "The Making of ...",
you can catch this behind-the-scenes look at
the film's creation, including interviews with Danny Elfman
and Paul Oakenfold, as well as the music video, on repeats
throughout the week on MTV (all listings are EST):
Thursday, July 19: 2:00 PM and 12:00 Midnight
Sunday, July 22: 9:30PM
To hear the full "Rule the Planet" remix again
(streamed in its entirety this week and next week only!),
check out the soundtrack website.
(The first 100,000 CDs will include an exclusive Topps
Trading Card in the package. Don't wait to get yours!)

CROSSOVER NEWS
Joshua Bell Plays Bernstein in Central Park
The only sign of the NWS Thunderstorm Watch in Central
Park was the sea of umbrellas facing the stage just before
Joshua Bell
and the New York Philharmonic presented the concert premiere of
Josh's new album West Side Story Suite, arranged by William Brohn.
In an interview with Leanne Hansen of NPR's Weekend Edition
Sunday, Josh described the Brohn arrangement as a truly
American piece that draws upon the 19th century European
practice of bringing the opera into the concert hall - "like
Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy...I can't wait to play this in
England."
Also appearing on stage with Josh and the New York Phil was
Kristin
Chenoweth, the Tony Award-winning fireball who brought great spirit
to the proceedings. For those who couldn't be there, the concert
was videotaped for airing on PBS as part of Great Performances
series on October 10. To hear samples from the album and to learn
about how West Side Story Suite came to pass, visit

Isn't it time you sent an E-card?
Pitch your pals a little sample from West Side Story Suite.
And you can hear Leanne Hansen's NPR interview with Josh online.
Details of Josh's hectic life in music are there for the clicking at his all-new web site,
JoshuaBell.com.

CLASSICAL NEWS
Horowitz: A Reminiscence: In Stores This Week!
The tradition of the piano virtuoso reaches back deep into the
19th century, but the virtuosi themselves were few and far
between. Vladimir Horowitz, who was born in Tsarist Russia
and died in New York, counted among the last proponents of
this great 19th-century tradition.
Horowitz: A Reminiscence is a companion piece to the video
that will air on selected PBS in August (check local listings).
In both the film and on the CD, listeners will encounter the
depth and breadth of the virtuoso's command of the instrument,
drawn from the decades of recordings made for the Columbia and
CBS Masterworks labels. The website for this album includes an
excerpt from the film, an example of Horowitz's unparalleled
interpretation of Chopin, song clips, and notes by Horowitz's
longtime record producer, Thomas Frost. To sample this great
performer's artistry,
check out the album site.
