SOUNDTRACKS NEWS
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within: Film In Theaters and
Soundtrack In Stores This Week! Soundtrack contains exclusive trailer for Final Fantasy X
Gone are the days when a big Hollywood flick needed a
cast of thousands. Now the cinematic devil is in the details.
Aki, Entertainment Weekly's "It" Virtual Actress of 2001,
has 60 thousand strands of hair to manage in every shot.
Sure, Columbia Pictures saved a little on the catering, but
the buzz is that Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within will
revolutionize how we see computer animation forever.
But for all the techno hype, Final Fantasy also delivers the
goods for great traditional moviemaking, including Elliot
Goldenthal's rich and dynamic score, in stores now.
Listen to some score clips and hear a bit of what Final Fantasy
is all about by going to finalfantasysoundtrack.com.
Planet of the Apes: Coming Soon -- Danny Elfman's New Score
-- Featuring "Rule the Planet" remix by DJ Paul Oakenfold -- A Collaboration between Elfman/Oakenfold that combines the best
of house and film music
Planet of the Apes is about to return as a blockbuster summer
remake. The film doesn't hit theaters until July 27.
But coming to a monitor near you is a sneak peak of the film and
its dazzling new score from acclaimed composer and Oingo-Boingo alum
Danny Elfman. The CD is in stores July 24 -- Check out the "Making Of"
special on MTV July 16 for exclusive recording session footage and
interviews with Elfman and Oakenfold, as well as the world premiere
of the "Rule the Planet" music video.

CROSSOVER NEWS
West Side Story Suite is already in stores, drawing raves from
critics and fans alike. Now Josh is taking the show on the road.
On July 10, Josh kicked the tour off with a brilliant performance
in Central Park with the New York Philharmonic, plus special guest
Kristin Chenoweth.
Happily for those of us who couldn't be there, the concert was
videotaped and will be airing on PBS Great Performances, October
10. Josh and the New York Philharmonic will be hitting the other
four boroughs through the rest of this week. These and other
details from Josh's hectic life in music are there for the
clicking at his all-new web site, JoshuaBell.com.
The West Side Story Suite CD features Joshua Bell playing dazzling
new arrangements from Leonard Bernstein's Broadway years with
the Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of another American
master, David Zinman. The CD includes notes by Jamie Bernstein Thomas.

you were the night of July 10th with this little something from West Side Story Suite.
Heartland: An Appalachian Anthology -- Yo-Yo Ma,
Mark O'Connor, Edgar Meyer, Joshua Bell, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush,
Mike Marshall, and special guests James Taylor and Alison Krauss
-- in stores now!
Nowhere has the deeply personal side of the American character
been better displayed than in our roots music. It was from this
well of inspiration that Aaron Copland drew his "Appalachian Spring,"
and that Carl Sandberg collected his "American Songbag."
Now another generation of musical artist has gone to the well of
traditional Americana, and Heartland: An Appalachian Anthology
stands as testimony to their labor of love. See -- and hear -- all
about it at HeartlandAnthology.com.

CLASSICAL NEWS
Hilary Hahn: Time Magazine Calls Her America's Best!
America's Best Young Classical Musician, that is. But she's the
only classical musician on the list, so what does "young" have to
do with it? The weekly news magazine makes its point. As writer
Terry Teachout says in the July 9 issue:
"Listening to Hahn's glowing recording of Samuel Barber's gently
poetic Violin Concerto, one has the same feeling of intimacy as if
the two of you were having dinner together. Only a very real person
-- a whole self -- can make music that way."
In other words, she's young only in age. (BTW, her companions on
the list include Phillip Roth, Ira Glass, and Dave Chase - not bad
company, all in all) To get the full story, go to
HilaryHahn.com.
And to hear what Teachout is talking about with the Barber concerto,
check out some samples at the web site for the
Grammy-nominated album.
And She's Sent a New Postcard from the Road: The Brahms Recording Sessions
One reason why Time Magazine likes Hilary so much is the
Postcard from the Road series she's been writing and photographing
since she was just a teen.
This time, she's writing from London after recording the Brahms
Violin Concerto with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under
the direction of Sir Neville Marriner. As Hilary tells us,
recording, while rewarding, is hard work - luckily for us, all we
have to do is put the CD in the player.
Catch her latest word from afar at HilaryHahn.com.
