SOUNDTRACKS NEWS
The Producers: Where Did We Go Right? Everywhere!
You could count the Tony Awards The Producers won on two
hands -- if, of course, you had six fingers on each. A record-
breaking 12 in all, surpassing the previous best of 10 set by
Hello, Dolly! back in 1964. For those who didn't keep a
scorecard at home, here is the shorthand for Mel Brooks and
Co.'s embarrassment of riches (embarrassment?! Nah!):
- Best Musical: The Producers
- Best Book of a Musical: Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan
- Best Original Score (Music & Lyrics): Mel Brooks (music & lyrics)
- Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical: Nathan Lane
- Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical: Gary Beach
- Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical: Cady Huffman
- Best Scenic Design: Robin Wagner
- Best Costume Design: William Ivey Long
- Best Lighting Design: Peter Kaczorowski
- Best Choreography: Susan Stroman
- Best Direction of a Musical: Susan Stroman
- Best Orchestrations: Doug Besterman
In fact, the only Tony noms from The Producers who didn't win
were those up against colleagues from the show. (It seems so unfair,
doesn't it?) When Nathan Lane got his Tony, he dragged Matthew
Broderick to the podium with him. "I can only accept this on behalf
of the two of us... Believe me, without him I am nothing."
The opening hour of the Award ceremony, aired on PBS, included eight
Tonys for The Producers in the first 47 minutes (PBS, of course,
does not have commercials. It took CBS two hours to come up with
the remaining four.)
All in all, a glorious night for Mel Brooks, though, as he said
in an uncharacteristic pause in the course of one of his numerous
acceptance speeches: "I'm not choking up, I'm just dry."
MEET MEL BROOKS!!
Rumor has it that Mel will participate in a New York area instore
event this month -- check back to the Sony Classical website for

In a pleasant little twist on the evening, Sony Classical recording
artist and NBC star Kristin Chenoweth presented Mel Brooks with his
very first Tony -- after all his years of collecting mere Oscars
and Emmys. But that twist only makes sense if you read below,
in Crossover.
People paying up to one hundred bucks a crack to see The Producers.
You can hear why -- for free! Check in on a live listening
session of the entire The Producers soundtrack,
tonight, June 5 at 8PM EST. You'll find it at
The Producers Cast Recording site.
The Man Who Cried soundtrack -- now in stores!
Christina Ricci, leading lady of The Man Who Cried, has been
hitting the airwaves to promote the new movie. NPR listeners
caught her on Fresh Air with Terry Gross this past week, with
an interview rebroadcast on the arts version of the program,
Fresh Air Weekend.
Salvatore Licitra, the tenor who provides John Turturro his voice
in the film, was unable to attend opening night festivities in
the United States. He was starring at La Scala.
Check out the dazzling new sites for both the
CD soundtrack
and Salvatore Licitra.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Coming Out in Home Video
The Academy Award winner begins its second life this month when it is
released in VHS and DVD. Described by more than one critic as the
film where Jane Austen met Kung Fu, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
and its director, Ang Lee, depend as much on the fluid beauty of
Tan Dun's Oscar-winning score as on the stunning fight sequences to
propel the story forward.
Sample the score, featuring cellist extraordinaire Yo-Yo Ma, at the
Soundtrack's web site.
Heads Up: Final Fantasy Soundtrack CD coming out soon
Watch these pages in weeks to come for details about Elliot
Goldenthal's forthcoming soundtrack to the film Final Fantasy:
The Spirits Within. Based on the most successful video game ever,
Final Fantasy, due out in early July, will be entirely
computer-generated. Goldenthal, whose credits include two Oscar
nominations for his scores to Michael Collins and
Interview with a Vampire, draws upon the rich tradition of
Star Wars and Bladerunner in this dynamic and bold composition.
In addition to the music, the Final Fantasy soundtrack CD will
also include an exclusive Final Fantasy X preview.

CROSSOVER NEWS
Terence Blanchard Brings Let's Get Lost to Jimmy McHugh's Hometown and the Boston Pops
Now that his new CD is in stores, Terence Blanchard, Downbeat's Artist
of the Year in 2000, is taking to the road, hitting,
among other places, Boston, Massachusetts, home of Jimmy McHugh,
the Red Sox, and the Boston Pops.
Boston Globe Jazz critic Bob Blumenthal commented on Terence
Blanchard's double appearance with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall
and Scullers, one of Boston's celebrated jazz venues:
"Trumpeter Terence Blanchard's quintet with guest vocalist
Jane Monheit was honoring Boston composer, pop songwriter
Jimmy McHugh. ... Monheit displayed ... confidence in her readings
of 'Steady' and 'I Can't Give You Anything but Love,' providing
just enough embellishment to fit snugly within the orchestral mass,
while Blanchard blew restrained obbligatos and more forthright solo
choruses. Blanchard is an imposing trumpeter with a butterscotch
tone who knows how to marshal his power and build to coherent
climaxes."

Kristin-Chenoweth.com: A Site for Sore Eyes
Before she hits the airwaves in her own NBC series on Tuesday night,
catch sights and sounds of Kristin Chenoweth right now on the web.
Of course, many viewers will have already seen Kristin in the first
hour of the Tony Awards, broadcast over PBS, where she made a little
bit of history in an unusually historic evening: It was she who
presented Mel Brooks with the first of his three Tony Awards.
Kristin had been there before, getting a Tony for her role as Sally
in the revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
Check out the multimedia site devoted to the Tony Award winner's
new album, Let Yourself Go!
Along with samples of the tunes drawn
from the golden age of American popular song, viewers can hear
Seinfeld's Jason Alexander talk up Kristin's versatility in the
Behind the Scenes video clip ("She's fabulous with Yiddish
folksongs"), and see Kristin try on more outfits than you'll ever
see at a Halloween Parade!
Accompanied by the famed Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra,
Kristin lets herself go with such classics as, well,
"Let Yourself Go!" The album also includes a duet with Jason
Alexander of Seinfeld fame. Kristin,
who got raves as Lily in the
Disney/ABC production of Annie, stars in her own NBC series
Kristin, premiering June 5 at 8:30 PM EST on NBC.

CLASSICAL NEWS
Two Hilary Hahn Postcards from the Road -- one got lost in the mail; the other arrives right on time!
Two of violinist Hilary Hahn's Postcards from the Road arrived
at the same time this week. The first, misplaced in the Memorial
Day mail, comes from Hilary's visit to Milwaukee. During a week
there, she broke away from the hotel routine and got to know more
than a little about the other city on Lake Michigan. The other comes
Washington, DC, where Hilary performed in an English festival, went to
a wedding, and actually got to spend a night at home.
Read about the good post-concert behavior among the nice people of
Milwaukee and how the people of our nation's capital adapted to
some curious English musical customs.
Next time she writes, Hilary will be back on tour in the land of Good
Queen Bess.
Heads Up: Midori's first new release in two years, out 6/26
Teaming up with violist Nobuko Imai, pianist / conductor Christoph
Eschenbach and the NDR Sinfonieorchester, violin sensation Midori
returns to stores the week of June 26 with a dazzling new recording
of Mozart. Paired with the gorgeous Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat
Major, K. 364 is Philip Wilby's reconstruction of Mozart's unusual
Concerto in D Major for Violin, Piano and Orchestra.

recording. And while you're at it, why not visit Midori's home page to see what she's been up to?
