Opera Debut of the Year: Licitra Takes Over for Pavarotti at the Met
In an unprecedented moment in opera history, Sicilian
tenor Salvatore Licitra
debuted at the Metropolitan Opera House for an ailing Luciano Pavarotti. Anticipated
as the last performance at the Met of Pavarotti's career,
audience members were disappointed to learn of his
last minute cancellation. Flown in at the last moment
on the Concorde, Licitra performed Puccini's "Tosca"
to a packed crowd of 7,000 and received a two-minute
standing ovation.

Silk Road Journeys Tour Continues to Blaze Trails
Yo-Yo Ma
and his fellow artisans amazed and thrilled
audience members at the Carnegie Hall stop on the
Silk Road Journeys Tour last week.
"Inspired by the idea of the continuous cultural exchange
that must have taken place along the ancient trade routes,
between Asia and Europe, Mr. Ma has revived and updated
the musical part of that exchange. In the process, he has
framed the argument that multiculturalism can enliven the
European and American classical tradition."
