Marlboro Festival Anniversary Edition
"Marlboro was the place where I decided to become a musician and, more importantly, where I met my future wife. Living through these summers, experiencing the great chamber music literature for the first time, led me to a commitment to music that I could not have received from one school or one teacher." -- Yo-Yo Ma
A new 2-CD set is now in stores in honor of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Marlboro Music and The Marlboro Legacy on Sony Classical. All first releases, the set contains Rudolf Serkin's Marlboro recordings of Beethoven's "Choral Fantasy" and Piano Concerto No.4 coupled with a CD devoted to chamber music, including Dvorák's String Quintet, Op.18 (Op.77) and Janácek's "Mladi" Suite for Winds. Culled from the Marlboro Festival archives, this release commemorates this special milestone in the history of one of the most important and influential music festivals in the world.
From 1957 CBS Masterworks helped record and preserve Marlboro Festival performances through its Marlboro Music series. In addition to recording many legendary chamber music performances, with such best loved artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Richard Stoltzman, Felix Galimir, and Pamela Frank, to name but a few, CBS documented a number of historic performances led by Pablo Casals during the thirteen summers he spent at the Festival. In celebration of Marlboro's 40th Anniversary, Sony Classical issued this very special collection that pays tribute to the artistry and leadership of Rudolf Serkin, including some previously unreleased performances by Pablo Casals from the Marlboro archives.
