A film destined to make cinematic history, director/writer Kerry Conran's Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow uses groundbreaking techniques to tell an epic, globe-trotting adventure story set in a richly imagined world of the future, circa 1939. Composer Edward Shearmur has written the film's lavish orchestral score, in the style of Hollywood's golden-age composers, and its end-title sequence features a new recording of the Oscar-winning standard "Over the Rainbow" sung by the acclaimed young American jazz singer Jane Monheit - all featured on Sony Classical's original motion picture soundtrack recording. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow opens nationwide on Friday, September 17, 2004, and the soundtrack will be released on Tuesday, September 7, 2004.
With never-before-seen special effects, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is the first feature film entirely shot against a blue screen, with every frame digitally filled after principal photography was completed. The film is the brainchild of Kerry Conran, who wrote and directed it in his film debut, and producer Jon Avnet. Composer Edward Shearmur (The Wings of the Dove, Charlie's Angels) has created a musical backdrop for the film that evokes the opulent sound of golden-age Hollywood scores, and Jane Monheit's vocal of "Over the Rainbow" over the end titles brings a wistful conclusion to a story that ends on the eve of World War II.
Starring Jude Law, who plays ace aviator Sky Captain, teams up with reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) to investigate the mysterious disappearance of famous scientists around the world. They travel to exotic places around the world, risking their lives as they race to stop the villainous Dr. Totenkopf in his plot to destroy the earth. Aiding them are the dashing Captain Franky Cook (Angelina Jolie), commander of an all-female amphibious squadron, and technical genius Dex Dearborn (Giovanni Ribisi). The film also features Michael Gambon, Bai Ling and Omid Djalili.
Singer Jane Monheit's performance on the film's soundtrack comes in the wake of her debut as an exclusive Sony Classical artist, with the release of her solo album Taking a Chance on Love (which also features the "Over the Rainbow" track from the film).
