BTTB (Back to the Basic) is a special version of an album released in 1999 in Japan to history-making chart success. The entire album -- performed by Ryuichi Sakamoto on solo piano -- consists of new compositions that restate the harmonic language originated by composers like Debussy, Satie and Ravel. Included is the piece "Energy Flow" which topped the Japanese singles charts last year as part of an EP titled URA BTTB, making Sakamoto the oldest musician ever to top this chart, and selling 2 million copies in the process. The US version of BTTB features a new track that has never been released in Japan, "Reversing". This album employs Sakamoto's unique melodic gifts in a vivid new way. The success of this music in Japan was a result of its ability to connect with people's need for music that soothes the spirit at the same time that it engages the mind.
Sakamoto is an Oscar®, Golden Globe and Grammy winning film music composer (for his scores for The Last Emperor and Sheltering Sky); a pioneer of "electronica" with his band Yellow Magic Orchestra (with the technopop classic "1000 Knives"); and collaborator with musicians like Brian Wilson, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Brian Eno and David Byrne. He has created two new albums that establish a turning point in his prolific career on the eve of a US tour that will feature music from both albums. Along with BTTB, Cinemage (SK 60780) features his "greatest hits" of his best-known music for film and television, including a new recording of the song "Forbidden Colours" with David Sylvian plus a new arrangement of his Oscar® winning music for The Last Emperor.
