Track Listing

See Isaac Stern's featured appearance in the hit new movie Music of the Heart.

Isaac Stern was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 76th Annual Gramophone Awards on October 18, 1999.

"These Isaac Stern recordings are a must in any music library, played exquisitely and beautifully by a twentieth-century master. I would have to write volumes to express my gratitude for what Isaac Stern has represented to me and to the music world. I hope that he may long continue to provide the kind of advice, love and knowledge that he has given so many already."

This new CD is being released in conjunction with publication of violinist Isaac Stern's memoirs, Isaac Stern: My First 79 Years issued by Knopf. Stern's co-author is the world-renowned novelist Chaim Potok, author of The Chosen and other bestsellers.

For this release we have brought together some of the works most closely associated with Stern, who has offered his own input on the selection of repertoire for this compilation. One of the most prolific recording artists of the violin repertoire, Isaac Stern has achieved the status of a cultural icon. His long association with Columbia and Sony Classical has yielded a massive discography that documents virtually every major work written for the violin -- all with Stern's characteristic warmth and panache.

This compilation shows off Stern's talents in both chamber and orchestral settings, with repertoire ranging from Bach and Mozart to Prokofiev and Stravinsky. Collaborating artists include such major names as Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, David Oistrakh, Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax and Pinchas Zukerman. This celebration of Stern at 79 will attract attention from violin enthusiasts, classical music fans, and all interested in the career of an American legend and a world-renowned artist.

Born in the Ukraine, Isaac Stern came to California in his first year and soon began studying music with his mother. Thanks to his prodigious talent, Stern in his teens was already playing under such renowned conductors as Pierre Monteux and Otto Klemperer. His long and distinguished career and his many activities beyond the concert stage have made Stern one of the best-loved and most widely recognized concert artists in the world.

A PBS documentary about Stern's life, "Isaac Stern: Life's Virtuoso" is scheduled to air on "American Masters" in April 2000.
