This epic large-scale choral and orchestral work was commissioned specifically for the historic international event of the official transfer of Hong Kong to China. Performed live at this milestone ceremony and broadcast across the globe, Symphony 1997: Heaven Earth Mankind represents a landmark as well in the impressive career of composer Tan Dun, who is quickly becoming one of the premier composers of today. Presented in a limited edition package by Sony Classical, this album features renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the 80-voice Yip's Children's Choir, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and the composer-conductor Tan Dun himself. In addition, Tan includes the ancient Bianzhong Bells, recently discovered in a lost Chinese tomb and played here for the first time in 2400 years!
