Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky: The Mono Years 1952-1955 Igor Stravinsky
|
The recorded legacy of Igor Stravinsky on Columbia Masterworks is unprecedented in the annals of recording history. It began with Goddard Lieberson who made an extraordinary commitment to record all of Stravinsky's works with the composer himself conducting, culminating in 1972 with the multiple LP release of Stravinsky: The Edition (now available on SX22K 46290). However, many of the earlier mono recordings of works Stravinsky later recorded in stereo were not included and collectors have been clamoring for reissues of this mono material ever since. In fact, the LP disc that combined the "L'histoire suite" and the "Octet" is a prized collector's item, far and away the hardest to find of Stravinsky's early recordings for Columbia Masterworks. Now you can hear it again, on compact disc for the first time with new remastering. This music and these performances have always sounded fresh and now, once again, the recordings do too. As a bonus we have added a rare Stravinsky rehearsal take of the Symphony in C. Part of the Masterworks Heritage series, this two-disc release includes informative liner notes by Tim Page and rare archival photos of Stravinsky at rehearsals and in the studio, making this an indispensable package. The remastered sound will be a revelation to anyone remembering the original LP releases.
