Ligeti: Mechanical Music

The award-winning György Ligeti Edition presents the works of one of the late-20th century's most influential and admired creative figures, who has created a body of work at once compelling, challenging, mesmerizing, atmospheric and brilliantly conceived. Here the music receives definitive performances by some of the most important interpreters of contemporary music of our day, all supervised by the composer, who has written new liner notes for each volume. Each volume in the edition sheds light on a different aspect of Ligeti's multi-faceted career, but all the performances are marked by meticulous technique, emotional honesty and utmost authenticity.

Included on Volume Five of the series are Ligeti's arrangement for barrel organ of "Continuum" (1970), "Hungarian Rock" (1978), "Capriccio Nos.1 and 2" (1947), "Invention" (1948), and "Musica ricercata" (1951), as well as the world-premiere recording of "Six Etudes for Player Piano" (1988-1994). Also featured on the disc is "Poeme Symphonique", a work written in 1962 for 100 metronomes -- a unique composition in which dizzying complex rhythms emerge, change, and disappear from the 100 metronomes as they gradually wind down.
