György LIGETI Ligeti: String Quartet Works Ligeti Edition Volume 1
|
The award-winning György Ligeti Edition presents the works of one of the late-20th century's most influential and admired creative figures, who has created a body of work at once compelling, challenging, mesmerizing, atmospheric and brilliantly conceived. Here the music receives definitive performances by some of the most important interpreters of contemporary music of our day, all supervised by the composer, who has written new liner notes for each volume. Each volume in the edition sheds light on a different aspect of Ligeti's multi-faceted career, but all the performances are marked by meticulous technique, emotional honesty and utmost authenticity. The quartets and duos for strings on this album mirror Ligeti's entire career. The earlier works "Balad i joc" ("Ballade and Dance") and the String Quartet No.1 were composed while Ligeti still lived and worked in relative obscurity in Hungary, following the stylistic path struck by Bartók. The String Quartet No.2 came in 1968, after Ligeti's musical experiments had made him famous, and the most recent work in the collection was written in 1982 as a birthday tribute to Ligeti's friend Hilding Rosenberg, a Swedish composer. All works are performed by members of the Arditti String Quartet. With the exception of the two quartets, these recordings are world premieres.
