György LIGETI Ligeti: A Cappella Choral Works Ligeti Edition Volume 2
|
The award-winning György Ligeti Edition presents the works of one of the late-20th century's most influential and admired creative figures, who has created a body of work at once compelling, challenging, mesmerizing, atmospheric and brilliantly conceived. Here the music receives definitive performances by some of the most important interpreters of contemporary music of our day, all supervised by the composer, who has written new liner notes for each volume. Each volume in the edition sheds light on a different aspect of Ligeti's multi-faceted career, but all the performances are marked by meticulous technique, emotional honesty and utmost authenticity. Volume 2 features Ligeti's works for unaccompanied chorus, including six in world premiere recordings: "Zwei Kanonen" ("Two Canons"), "Batlehemi királyok" ("The Three Wise Men"), "Inaktelki nóták" ("Songs from Inaktelke"), "Hüsvét" ("Easter"), "Hortobágy, Magos kösziklának" ("The Mighty Rock") and "Kállal kettös" ("Double Dance from Kálló"). These and most of the the other selections on this disc were written before Ligeti's departure from Communist-controlled Hungary in 1956, when the composer set Hungarian texts in a folk-influenced style to resist the official Communist cultural dogma of "Socialist Realism." Other works on the album feature German or Latin texts and were written after he settled in the West. The London Sinfonietta Voices performs under the direction of Terry Edwards.
