The Passion of Tango
The Songs of a Legend
Argentina's Brilliant Young Tenor Celebrates the Music of Carlos Gardel
Tenor Marcelo Álvarez echoes the romantic mystique of legendary tanguero Carlos Gardel on his latest recording, Marcelo Álvarez Sings Gardel. Produced, arranged and conducted by Argentinian composer and arranger Jorge Calandrelli, Marcelo Álvarez Sings Gardel is available now in the US and internationally.
Though his career as one of the leading operatic tenors of his generation has taken him far from his native Argentina, Álvarez returned to Buenos Aires to explore and record the classic tangos made popular by Carlos Gardel. Gardel was an Argentinian singer, songwriter and folk hero whose popularity is greater than ever decades after his death in 1935.
The album features Álvarez' interpretations of 13 of Carlos Gardel's most popular hits, 11 of which Gardel composed. They include a specially created "duet" with Gardel, arranged to complement the singer's 1934 recording of his signature song "Mi Buenos Aires Querido". Though Gardel never sang opera, he heard and admired the great opera singers of his time, including the Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, who himself was a fan of Gardel's.
Over just five years, Álvarez has emerged from unlikely beginnings -- he was the foreman of a furniture factory in Córdoba -- to become an international star in the world of opera. Gardel's similar rise to stardom from humble beginnings personified the rise of tango itself, from its roots in the ghetto to its popularity in the heights of society throughout Latin America and as far as Paris. As a child, Álvarez had heard Gardel's songs and recordings, which are almost synonymous musically with Argentina and its culture. But this recording presented Álvarez with his first opportunity to explore these classic songs and sing them himself.
Marcelo Álvarez: In Search of Gardel, a companion documentary film has been produced by Rhombus Media, producers of The Red Violin (SK 63010), Yo-Yo Ma's Inspired by Bach (SK 63122), 32 Short Films About Glenn Gould (SK 46686), and other celebrated films. The 60-minute film will be broadcast by ARTE/LA in Europe, NHK in Japan, Film & Arts in South America, and select PBS stations in the U.S. The film documents the making of the recording, and includes interviews with Gardel scholars and experts, as well as footage from some of the seven films Gardel made for Paramount Pictures.
