TAN Dun Ying HUANG Bitter Love
|
Peter Sellars' staging of the controversial opera Peony Pavilion, featuring an original score by composer/conductor Tan Dun, was performed in the US for the first time this spring after a celebrated and very high-profile international tour. Hailed as an "irresistible love letter", "a high-profile, immensely important cultural event", and the "music-theater event of the season", Peony Pavilion features an extraordinary score by renowned avant-garde composer Tan Dun, with stunning vocal performances by soprano Ying Huang.
The world premiere recording Bitter Love features all the passionate love songs from Peony Pavilion. Performed by Ying Huang, these arias tell the story of the opera in its purest and simplest form. Tan Dun's operatic score is an inspired blend of kunquo, Tibetan and western chants, arias, instruments and rhythms. Fusing Chinese melodies with rock, instruments include a mixture of the traditional and the avant-garde: electric guitars, tabla, pipa, bamboo oboe, synthesizers, and a chorus of aboriginal and western voices.
