Featuring the superstar duo of Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax (celebrating their 25th anniversary as a duo), John Corigliano's Phantasmagoria (The Fantasy Album) is a whimsical, mesmerizing and dramatic group of works spotlighting the composer's outstanding craft and prolific imagination. The sheer versatility of the writing stands out above all as further confirmation why Corigliano is celebrated as one of the leading composers of his generation.
Highlights of the CD include Yo-Yo Ma performing "Fancy on a Bach Air" for unaccompanied cello -- a work inspired by the solo cello suites of the great composer, and "Phantasmagoria" for cello and piano, a work based on Corigliano's landmark opera The Ghosts of Versailles. Pianist James Tocco performs "Etude Fantasy" on the album.
Corigliano's score to The Red Violin (SK 63010) received the 1999 Academy Award® for Best Original Score.
